2. The 2007-09 state budget

State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster highlights educational items in the new 2007-09 Wisconsin State Budget in her public statement, available at http://dpi.wi.gov/eis/pdf/dpi2007_134.pdf.

Burmaster says the budget "makes crucial investments in our children and their schools."

Many of the state superintendent's proposals were incorporated in the final budget, including the Advancing Rural Wisconsin legislation to support rural districts, funding for new initiatives in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education; funding for international education; and grants that help put top quality educators in high poverty schools.

Following Burmaster's proposals, funding was increased for SAGE, public libraries, school breakfast, and gifted and talented education.
