4. Five new regional science & engineering fairs

You may have heard that Wisconsin's own Phillip Streich, a home-schooled student from Platteville, took grand prize at the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) during the 2006-07 year.

A new effort is underway to increase participation in ISEF by Wisconsin students. The state's involvement is currently below national averages. ISEF draws its contestant pool from winners of state, local, and regional fairs that meet certain criteria.

The Badger State Science & Engineering Fair (BSSEF) organization hopes to give more Wisconsin students the opportunity to compete in 2007-08. Beginning this year, the group is running five new regional science fairs serving Kenosha, Oshkosh, Sheboygan, Waukesha, and Western Wisconsin. Previously, the group held only two regional fairs, in Milwaukee and Madison.

The Badger State Science & Engineering Fair, which next occurs March 15 in Milwaukee, is the only science fair offering participation to students across Wisconsin. Student winners from the regional fairs as well as the State Fair will have the opportunity to progress to ISEF to compete against students from more than 50 countries.
