3. Continuous improvement grants awardedState Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster announced $6.9 million in grants to support continuous improvement activities that will increase student learning. "These grants will help districts supplement their continuous improvement activities and strengthen their efforts to raise achievement for all students," Burmaster said. The grants will go to 27 school districts, three non-district charter schools, and three statewide school improvement activities. Funding comes from the federal Title I program, part of the reauthorized Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 2001, also known as the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. In previous years, districts and schools have used grant awards to increase student tutoring, expand summer school programming, provide professional development, purchase supplemental materials, develop early intervention programs, or provide outreach in languages other than English for parents and families of English-language learners. Two districts, Milwaukee and Menominee Indian, will share $595,000 to continue Alliance for Attendance activities. "The Alliance for Attendance framework brings the community together to find solutions to improve daily attendance," Burmaster said. Funds for the 2007-08 school year are for the first year of a two-year grant allocation for services to Title I-funded schools. District grant applications included a district evaluation of school improvement efforts based on the Department of Public Instruction's Characteristics of Successful Districts.
