3. Winners of new Prevention Partner Award

At the Building the Heart of Successful Schools conference, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster honored four organizations with the State Superintendent's Prevention Partner awards. This new award program honors organizations which have worked alongside the Department of Public Instruction to make a statewide impact on prevention in schools.

When presenting the awards, Burmaster said, "Schools are much more effective at keeping our students safe if they are in partnership with parents and community organizations. School-family-community partnerships are essential for helping young people to develop into caring, responsible, and capable students." She said the award-winning organizations are "heroes among us that work toward that end without seeking attention or reward."

The honored organizations are:

- The American Lung Association of Wisconsin, for its work on tobacco prevention and cessation,
- the Center for School, Youth, and Citizen Preparedness, for leadership in crisis prevention and response planning,
- Mental Health America of Wisconsin, for mental health and suicide prevention efforts, and
- the Wisconsin Education Association Trust, for addressing issues of school employee health and wellness.

More on the work of each honoree can be found in the complete news release, available at http://dpi.wi.gov/eis/pdf/dpi2007_149.pdf.
