4. Rural award program invites nominations

The DPI is seeking nominations for the 2008 Standing Up for Rural Wisconsin awards, which recognize school-library-community partnerships that advance and celebrate rural life.

"Wisconsin's rural areas are alive, healthy, and vibrant," writes State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster in her letter inviting nominations. "While available public resources are limited, there are no limits on the enthusiasm, drive, and energy that is emanating from rural areas all across the state."

The Standing Up for Rural Wisconsin awards are part of the state superintendent's Advancing Rural Wisconsin initiative. Among the other components of this effort is a package of economic support, passed into law in the 2007-09 state budget, which will assist rural school districts with their unique challenges.

The submission deadline for the awards is fast approaching: December 21, 2007. The award ceremony will be held in March at the State Capitol.
