5. New resources for teaching about elections and governmentIn the coming year students, like other Americans, will find themselves paying increased attention to politics. New resources can help teachers use the 2008 election season as a jumping-off point for education about our political system. Topics covered by new articles in the "Governing Wisconsin" series from the Wisconsin Legislative Reference Bureau include Wisconsin's open meetings and public records laws, the history of parliamentary law, and Wisconsin taxes. Some earlier articles are available as podcasts. See http://www.legis.state.wi.us/lrb/GW. For more than 60 years, Congressional Quarterly (CQ) has delivered premium information to its subscribers on the inner workings of Congress and Washington. Now it is offering free materials--news, analysis, and interactive tools about politics and elections--at its expanded website, http://www.cqpolitics.com. Stories are written by CQ's 150 reporters and editors, the largest press corps covering politics and Washington, or handpicked by editors from hundreds of sites across the Web. CQ is owned by the Times Publishing Company of St. Petersburg, Florida, which is in turn owned by the Poynter Institute, a non-profit school for journalists which works to advance the quality of reporting about government. C-SPAN Classroom (http://www.c-spanclassroom.org) is offering teachers access to an array of free non-partisan curriculum resources for use during the 2008 election cycle and beyond. By registering for a free C-SPAN Classroom membership at http://www.c-spanclassroom.org/Registration.aspx, teachers gain access to a searchable database of video clips, student activities and contests, and other resources. New teacher members will also be sent a free DVD of 17 C-SPAN video clips that can be used to teach important and complex concepts in civics and government.
