6. "Visioneer" competition is innovative

From Fashion Design to Video Production to Urban & Regional Planning, Wisconsin middle and high school students are invited to compete in diverse real-world design challenges at the second annual Visioneer Design Challenge in Milwaukee.

The Visioneer Design Challenge is the first such event in the nation. Students compete in two phases: they first complete a long-term project that requires research and working with people in the community, then they tackle an on-site challenge, taking their designs to the next level while working with professionals in that design field.

These professionals are also available by email as students work on their long-term challenges.

The Wisconsin Art Education Association, which organizes the competition, says the atmosphere was electric at the inaugural 2007 event, and that a very high level of learning was reported by teachers and design professionals. That learning could be a great help for the student contestants, since the need for designers is expected to continue to grow as technology develops.

The other areas of competition are Animation, Architecture, Digital Photography, Graphic Design, Illustration, Point-Of-Purchase Design, Production Design, and Web Design.

This year's long-term challenges are already viewable at on-line. Also available is an informative brochure, which includes the one-page registration form, which schools must complete by February 1 to have students participate.

The on-site competition will be held April 25 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus, Peck School of Fine Arts.
