2. AP test funding for economically disadvantaged students

Acting quickly to meet a federal deadline in the final weeks of 2007, state Senator John Lehman and state Representative Sondy Pope-Roberts worked with the DPI to pass legislation expanding access to Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate tests.

By enacting a law allowing federal funding to cover the costs of the tests, Wisconsin made itself eligible for U.S. Department of Education grants of up to $140,000 in 2008. The funding will pay for at least 1,500 Advanced Placement exams at the full cost of $83 per exam and 95 International Baccalaureate exams at the rate of $120 each for students who are economically disadvantaged.

"For many students, the costs of these exams represent a significant barrier to taking the coursework," said State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster. "These grants will help us continue to advance rigorous high school courses and ensure access to these exams for all students, including socio-economically disadvantaged students."
