5. Teacher opportunities: Supreme Court, cultural exchanges, more

Deadlines are approaching for some enriching and unusual professional development opportunities:

A two-day conference held in March at the State Bar of Wisconsin will bring educators together with attorneys, judges, and Wisconsin Supreme Court justices to explore ways to bring the state Supreme Court to life for students. The deadline for filling out the brief, on-line application is January 31. A similar opportunity focusing on the U.S. Supreme Court happens in summer in Washington, D.C. That deadline is March 10.

Teachers and high school students are invited to participate in the long-standing exchange between Wisconsin and the German state of Hessen. Many of the costs of this travel and enrichment opportunity are covered for participants. The deadline to submit applications is February 15. Another study abroad program in Germany is open to social studies teachers, with an application deadline of February 4.

Chiba, Wisconsin's sister-state in Japan, is looking for teaching assistants for English classes in its junior and senior high schools. These one-year positions are open to anyone who holds a bachelor's degree, or will have one by May 31, 2008. The application deadline is February 8.

The Wisconsin Indian Education Association is seeking nominations for its annual awards honoring Native American educators, students, parents, elders, and friends of education. The nomination deadline is March 4.
