6. Of presidents and portraits

Happy Presidents Day! As minds to turn to American presidents and American history in general today, following are resources for future use.

George Washington's portrait is available to schools at no charge from the Mount Vernon Ladies Association. To request a portrait, principals should send a letter on school letterhead to Ann Bay, Associate Director for Education, George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens, P.O. Box 110, Mount Vernon, VA 22121. The letter should include a description of where the portrait will be hung and the school's street address for UPS deliveries.

Abraham Lincoln's photograph is just the tip of the iceberg of the Picturing America initiative offered to schools and libraries by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Successful applicants will receive high-quality reproductions of forty striking works of American art created by artists including American Indian artisans, painter Mary Cassatt, and architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Each piece provides a window to American history and culture, especially when used in conjunction with the included teacher's guide.

The new DVD, Andrew Jackson: Good, Evil, and the Presidency, comes out in April from PBS. The Educator's Edition includes a DVD-ROM collection of primary and secondary source material (ranging from historical documents to political cartoons). Also included is the documentary itself, an unvarnished portrait of a controversial and influential American leader. Preorders are being accepted now at the PBS Teacher Shop website.
