6. Upcoming library, economics, culture opportunitiesSome opportunities with imminent deadlines: EconChallenge ONLINE! gives high school students the opportunity to compete against students from across Wisconsin. The 2008 challenge began last week and continues through March 15th. During this period, students can enter the EconChallenge ONLINE! website at any time to complete a 35 question rapid fire exam consisting of macro, micro, and international questions. Each student will be given 35 minutes, but all team members must complete the exam within three hours. The top ten teams from each division will be invited to participate in a state competition to be held in the Madison area mid-April. To participate, teachers register on the website, and may then register their teams. During the next two weeks, you can help Wisconsin understand the economic impact of its public libraries by taking part in a survey run by NorthStar Economics, under contract with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. NorthStar would like a broad range of Wisconsin residents, both those who use libraries and those who don't, to respond on-line. The survey will remain on-line through the end of next week. The results will be announced at the Wisconsin Association of Public Libraries Conference on May 1, 2008 in Stevens Point. Information on other state and regional studies of the economic impact and taxpayer return on investment of public libraries can be found on the DPI website. Wisconsin K-12 teachers are invited to join either of two multi-disciplinary tours exploring Wisconsin's varied cultures and their connections to the land. The tours are a project of Wisconsin Teachers of Local Culture and feature scholars, cultural and natural resource specialists, and guest presenters. One event delves into the Ashland-Chequamegon Bay area, June 23-27. The other explores Milwaukee, August 4-8. Registration deadline is March 31.
