6. Health, lakes, charter schools, and more upcoming events

Some exciting upcoming events from the Wisconsin Education Calendar:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical Students are sponsoring "Healthy Classrooms: A Public Health Education Symposium," aimed at anyone involved in K-12 education or public wellness, April 9, 5:30 - 8:30 p.m., at the UW-Madison Health Sciences Learning Center. The program will provide new and exciting ways for school personnel and parents to increase classroom awareness of important public health issues and encourage integration of public health into the K-12 curriculum. Topics include sexual education, ADHD, depression, environmental responsibility, and more. On-line registration is required because of the food order for the evening's catered reception.

"Leave No Child Inside: Engaging Youth in Lake Issues," is an event for educators and others who want to teach, mentor, and inspire the young people who will assume the "stewardship" of our lakes and their surrounding natural habitats. The morning workshop will be Thursday, April 17, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay, held in conjunction with the Wisconsin Lakes Convention.

The 8th annual Wisconsin Charter Schools Conference, co-sponsored by the Wisconsin Charter Schools Association and the DPI, will welcome national speakers including Dean Kern, director of the Charter Schools Program (CSP) for the U.S. Department of Education, and Nelson Smith, president of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster will open the conference with a keynote presentation. The conference is April 21-22 at the Madison Concourse Hotel. High-quality breakout sessions are also designed to provide information to assist charter schools, developers, and authorizers.

The Autism Society of Wisconsin will hold its annual conference May 1-3, 2008, at the Regency Suites/KI Convention Center in Green Bay. More information is available on-line, including information on scholarships offered by some organizations for parents of autistic children.
