6. World language and culture opportunitiesWorld language and culture opportunities abound this summer. Concordia Language Villages is offering both Teacher Seminars (June 22 - July 2) and Master of Education programs (July 6-29, 2008, and July 5-28, 2009, with on-line work during the intervening year). Language teachers and others from around the United States are expected for the Seminars. The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh offers a Global Educator Certificate Program, which involves critical study of global events, systems, and issues. Students will also learn to infuse global perspectives into classrooms and places of work and foster relationships with colleagues in other countries through travel. The Global Educators Program at UW-River Falls is designed to provide educators of all types with 3-or-4-week team-teaching experiences in sites around the world, coupled with graduate study in Wisconsin. Participants choose their locations; the list of potential sites is expanded each year in response to specific requests. In Milwaukee, a Summer Teacher Institute (July 8-11) on Human Rights and Historical Memory in Latin America will focus on state terrorism, exploring the effects of military dictatorships and human rights abuses, and investigating the way media has commemorated the atrocities. High school students who are at least 17 years old may apply for Startalk scholarships to study Arabic or Chinese at Beloit College this summer. Application deadline is April 25. ![]()
