6. Students earn national honors in culinary, cheerleading, academic contests

Culinary arts students from Badger High School in Lake Geneva were declared national champions in the culinary category at the 7th Annual National ProStart Invitational in San Diego, April 24-26. The National ProStart Invitational, presented by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, attracts top high school students from around the country that are enrolled in the ProStart restaurant and foodservice management program. After winning the state competition, the Badger team beat out 35 other states and territories to claim the national title. Their win makes Wisconsin the only state to have taken home the trophy twice. Students Jessica Bania, Kendall Kelly, Clayton Maricle, and Mike Pane practiced since November at creating a three-course meal in 60 minutes. Their win garnered each of them a $5,000 scholarship and offers from several culinary schools.

Finishing second at the United States Academic Decathlon competition in Garden Grove, California, on May 3, was the Waukesha West High School team. In Division II, Waukesha West fielded eight of the nine highest-scoring individual students. The team was just one question shy of the national title, which was taken by a Division I school, Moorpark High School of Moorpark, California. Waukesha West previously won the national championship in 2002, and has triumphed at the state competition for seven years running.

Cheerleaders from the Wisconsin Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired (WCBVI) won the championship at the national conference for schools for the blind and visually impaired. The competition took place in Janesville, since it was WCBVI's turn to host the conference. Another first-place trophy went to Lee Wilson, representing Wisconsin in the outstanding cheerleader event. The cheerleading squad, consisting of Wilson, Maggie Fitzwilliams, Kim Greer, Angelica Hope, Tricia Milberger, Genna Pobanz, Chase Pruitt, Tauri Ramsey, and Kim Robinson, performed a routine of stunts, a dance, and a cheer to beat out twelve other schools.
