6. Educational Computer Games Compiled by ECB

The Wisconsin Educational Communications Board has compiled a list of "Serious Games": challenging computer games designed to teach complex concepts using the technology and design principles of commercial video games.

Included are such titles as Wolfquest, where students learn about wolf ecology by living the life of a wild wolf in Yellowstone National Park; Food Force, where players struggle to feed millions of hungry people on an island; and Electrocity, where players manage a virtual town's energy, environment, tourism, and economic development.

Also included are a number of simpler, but still educational, games for those looking for less involved activities. For example, Minyanland takes students to a virtual community to learn financial skills, and Survive Dickens' London, has players dodging the gangs, villains, trials, and tribulations of the Victorian metropolis.

The games list, which is the November offering in ECB's "Surf Report" series, is timed to coincide with the American Library Association's National Gaming Day on November 15.
