Program Description:

W.E.B. Du Bois High School (Du Bois) believes that students learn best in a school which is small, inclusive, student-centered, focused, connected to community, assessment- and statistic-driven, and guided by the tradition of social justice. The Du Bois program is based on extensive research supporting small and focused high schools. The Du Bois High School program is partnered with the Marquette University College of Communication.

Du Bois will train and educate students for leadership in their communities, the city, the country, and the world. The goal of this small high school (400 students grades 9 through 12) is for all students to graduate and become life-long learners, whether they decide to pursue higher education or enter the workforce.  Measurable objectives include improvement each year in Terra Nova tests, the WKCE, grades, SAT and ACT scores; high attendance; all students involved in community service; and increased involvement of parents and community partners.  An annual Statistical Evaluation Day will review all the gathered statistics and use them to set school-wide goals. During our first year the school has the following goals; over 90% attendance, scoring above the MPS average on the district mandated Terra Nova test, and advancing each student’s reading level by two grades.

Unique features of Du Bois include a focus on communications along with an all-around education, both in basics and in college and employment preparation; integrated curriculum; flexible scheduling throughout the year so that students can take advantage of in-school instruction and work in the community, businesses and institutions of higher education; strong involvement of parents; and deep ties to the community and community service.

The communication theme will be applied in all areas including:  internet use, television production (web and broadcasting), video and radio production, desktop publishing, balanced literacy (MPS campaign to ensure all students can read and write), regular cohort discussions, school assemblies, school-wide discussions, training in conflict resolution, emphasis on strong relations between adults and students, discussions with parents, guardians and community, discussions with international partners, and discussions among staff.
