The complete statewide Eighth Grade Knowledge & Concepts Examination statistics are available for downloading in Excel 4.0 format. You need Microsoft Excel or a spreadsheet program that can read Excel 4.0 files to view the downloaded file.


Five hundred and twenty schools in 416 districts (only districts with eighth graders) took the knowledge and concepts examinations. Seven had an AGCS of 180 or above. The statewide average AGCS was 155.

Using this examination, 21 districts had eighth grades low in performance based on an AGCS below 140 points.

The first portion of the assessment consists of multiple-choice questions in reading, mathematics, language, science, and social science. Each section is scored separately, and a multiple-choice battery total is calculated for students who took all five multiple-choice tests. The battery total for all Wisconsin schools was in the 73rd percentile with the highest scoring district achieving a score of 95, and the lowest scoring district achieving a score of 31.

For the reading portion of the test, the highest score was 90, and the lowest score was 24. Statewide, scores averaged in the 66th percentile.

On the mathematics portion of the multiple-choice test, the highest score was in the 96th percentile, and the lowest score was in the 31st percentile. The statewide average was in the 71st percentile.

The highest score in language was in the 90th percentile, while the lowest was in the 20th percentile. The Wisconsin average was in the 60th percentile.

The next portion of the multiple-choice test was in science. A 93rd percentile was the highest score, and 36th percentile was the lowest score. The statewide average was in the 69th percentile.

Social science was the final portion of the multiple-choice section. Test scores averaged in the 67th percentile across Wisconsin, with the highest at 89 and the lowest at 32.

The writing portion of the Eighth Grade Knowledge & Concepts Examinations was also reported by national percentile ranks. Expressive writing scores averaged in the 58th percentile, with high at the 90th percentile and low at 18th.

On the persuasive writing portion of the test, Wisconsin students averaged in the 37th percentile. Despite that, the highest score was in the 98th percentile. The bottom score, however, was in the fourth percentile.

Mean raw scores were used for the short-answer tests. The average top reading score was 7.8 out of nine questions correct. The average low score was 5.2. The state average was 6.3 points.

The best average score in mathematics was 8.1, and the lowest average score was 3.9. The statewide average was 5.8.

Science scores averaged 4.6 across Wisconsin. The highest average score was 6.3, and the lowest was 2.7.

The average score on the final portion of the short-answer tests, social science, was 3.8 out of nine. The highest average score was 6.1, while the lowest score was 2.6.
