Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) receives funds through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-Division of Adolescent and School Health (CDC/DASH). These funds allow DPI to provide educational resources, technical assistance, and staff development opportunities for the development and promotion of youth (PreK-12) prevention education programs, with an emphasis on preventing HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). For example, DPI provides technical assistance to urban school districts to support staff development activities to increase the knowledge and skills of school staff in curriculum development, classroom instruction, and student assessment in the areas of HIV/STI/pregnancy prevention and human growth and development. Other projects include the development of educational resources, like Human Growth and Development: A resource packet to assist school districts in program development, implementation, and evaluation and the resource directory Youth and HIV/AIDS: Resources for Educators, Policymakers, and Parents 2006-2007, and it's 2008 addendum.
Building Skills for Health Literacy: Human Sexuality
This technical assistance document presents a step-by-step approach to teaching and assessing for the skills of the health education standards as they relate to human sexuality. Skill-based instruction and assessment are critical to helping youth build the skills necessary to access accurate information, make informed decisions, communicate effectively and succeed in managing their own health. By shifting the emphasis from knowing health facts to developing health skills, teachers are provided a more complete and authentic picture of student achievement and allow the students to play an active role in their learning. This resource is only available in hard copy; please contact Jackie Brashi at 608-266-4447 or email Jackie to request a copy.
Sexual Behavior and Wisconsin Students 2007 Fact Sheet
Sexual Behavior and Wisconsin Students is a fact sheet created by the Department of Public Instruction in collaboration with the Department of Health and Family Services. The fact sheet can be used to communicate the need for prevention programs, highlighting disparities, and offers ideas for multi-strategy approaches that address the comprehensive needs of youth.
