Wisconsin School Crisis Preparedness
Monthly "Best Practice" Webcast Series
Tuesday, September 16, 2008
9:00 - 9:25 a.m.
In the spring of 2008, a new Wisconsin law governing school-based youth suicide prevention was passed by the legislature and signed by Governor Doyle, Wisconsin statute, s. 115.365. All staff should be able to recognize suicide warning signs and know how to respond. In the Youth Suicide Prevention for Schools presentation, DPIs School Psychologist John Humphries discusses relevant data about youth suicide in Wisconsin, risk factors, early and late warning signs, and suggests methods for dealing with suicidal students including ACT: Acknowledge, Care, and Tell. ACT is a central skill taught in an evidence-based youth suicide prevention program called SOS-Signs of Suicide. SOS has been shown to reduce suicidal acts in youth. It is also an important skill for adults to know and be able to do.
