Wisconsin School Tobacco Grant Program

The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has completed the renewal grant award process for the 2006-2007 school year. The school tobacco grant program appropriates funds totaling $350,000 from resources coordinated by the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, Division of Public Health, Tobacco Control Program. Twenty-five school districts have been awarded tobacco grants to help enhance and maintain current tobacco control programs based on the CDC Guidelines for School Health Programs to Prevent Tobacco Use and Addiction.

These funding priorities are part of a statewide effort to become more focused and strategic in reducing youth tobacco use.

new 2008-09 AODA and Tobacco Grant Competitions Underway

The Department of Public Instruction and the Student Services/Prevention and Wellness Team would like to announce the opening of the competitive grant competition for both the AODA Program grants and the School Tobacco grants.

The AODA Program grants will be awarded for a three year cycle of funding, starting in 2008-09 and running through 2011. The School Tobacco grants will run for two years from 2008-09 through 2010. After this cycle, there will be grant competitions on a yearly basis. With alternating cycles between the two programs, coordinators will no longer be required to write two grants in the same year.

We concluded our four regional training workshops in the first week of February. The materials have also been mailed to all districts statewide, as well as found on this website and the SSPW grant programs webpage.

The new AODA Grant is due in our offices on Wednesday, April 23rd. The application has sections that are fill-enabled, while other areas require narrative responses to be pasted into the application.

The new Tobacco Grant is due in our offices on Friday, March 14th. This application also has sections fill-enabled, and others that require Word documents to be attached. Make sure to move through the grant with the tab key from one section to the next; do not move with the curser since this causes problems. Tabbing through the budget sections will operationalize the summing functions.

There was some confusion during the workshops on the due dates of the grant applications. The dates provided on this site are correct and in bold.

This year's AODA Program grant allocations by category have been reduced by 20% which will allow DPI to award more grants.

Please note the major changes this year are as follows:

AODA Program Grant - The Department is placing a strong emphasis on the selections of research-based programs. For those applicants that do not choose to include a research-based program as part of their plan, a science-based planning process is an expectation.

AODA Grant Workbook

School Tobacco Grant - Identify the disparate youth population to be targeted for services with at least a portion of the grant funds, as well as a description of the activity targeting that population. For projects that do not propose tobacco cessation, there must be a description of the referral network available to students. Finally, there is an expectation to participate in a collaborative planning process with the locally funded tobacco coalition, or the unfunded public health agency charged with tobacco control responsibilities in your city or county.
