Frequently Asked Questions

Teacher Aides and Assistants

What do I need to do to become certified as a teacher's aide?

The Department of Public Instruction does not license regular education classroom aides or paraprofessionals and no license is required. Contact an employing school district directly for opportunities as regular education aides. A license is required for special education classroom aides. See the following question.

What is required for a person to get a Wisconsin Special Education Aide license?

The special education aide license (#883) must be requested by an employing school district. Hiring requirements are established by individual school districts and may include experience, coursework, etc. The first step is to interview with a school district. If they wish to hire you, then complete a PI 1602-PA license application form (downloadable or available at the school) and submit it to the Department with a $75 application fee.

I hold a substitute teaching license. Can I work as a special education aide in the district or do I need a separate license?

An individual who holds a current substitute teaching license or a current substitute teaching permit may work as a special education aid (#883) under that license. The substitute license or permit is also acceptable for federal categorical aid reimbursement of the district's costs.

I have an associate degree in early childhood education from a Wisconsin Technical College. Am I eligible for a license in early childhood education?

To teach in a Wisconsin public school, an individual must graduate from an approved teacher education program from a 4-year accredited teacher education college. One or two-year programs from technical colleges are not eligible for teacher licensing. You may wish to check directly with employing school districts in your area for possible opportunities as a classroom assistant or aide. A hiring district would be able to request the special education aide license for you.
