National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

FOR TEACHERS INTERESTED IN BEING CERTIFIED BY NBPTS...

Contact NBPTS and follow their procedures or call them to request a Candidate Application Packet at 800-22TEACH. Do not send any money, checks, third party payments or NBPTS candidate applications to DPI. The department has no role in the application process and we would return money and applications to you which would delay your application and might jeopardize your receiving a Wisconsin subsidy.

Subsidy of your application fee

Depending on the amount of NBPTS' annual federal funding, the Board awards each state a credit to be applied toward new candidates' application fees, up to a maximum of $1,250 per candidate. This credit is called a subsidy and is administered by DPI. The amount of the subsidy is not determined until all candidates for the year have applied and Wisconsin receives notification of its total subsidy amount. Subsidies can then be awarded equitably among all applicants. Regardless of when you apply to the NBPTS, your completed subsidy application with your NBPTS Candidate Number included, must be submitted to DPI by December 15. No subsidy will be available to late applicants.

  • First-time candidate fees can be subsidized for up to one-half of the fee ($1,250 per candidate).
  • Retake candidates who have not previously received subsidy funds can receive subsidies for the cost of up to two retake exercises if both exercises are taken within the same candidate cycle.
  • Subsidy funds are "last dollar" funds - awarded after the nonrefundable $500 application fee, charitable grants and scholarships, school district contributions, etc., have been applied to the fee.
