Praxis II: Subject Assessment Test Guidelines

All students who complete a professional educator preparation program after August 31, 2004 must take the Praxis II: Subject Assessments required by Wisconsin for their license area in order to complete a program and qualify for an educator license. Listed below is information about this assessment.

  • All educator candidates who graduate after August 31, 2004 must take the Praxis II assessment in the license area for which the candidate is seeking licensure.
  • Educators licensed prior to September, 2004 returning to complete a license program in a new subject must take the Praxis II assessment.
  • Educators licensed prior to September, 2004 returning to complete programs to add on age levels that were not covered by their previous licenses must take the Praxis II assessment.
  • Educators who complete state approved professional educator preparation programs after August 31, 2004 in other states will need to document that they have passed the specific Praxis II test(s) required by Wisconsin in their licensure area(s) to obtain an Initial Educator or Professional Educator license in Wisconsin.
  • Educators, who completed a program in another state and completed an assessment different from what is required in Wisconsin, must take and pass the test required in Wisconsin. A one-year non-renewable license may be issued to applicants from other states that need to take and pass the appropriate Praxis II test(s).

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) produces the Praxis assessments and coordinates the assessment dates and test locations. The following information can be found at the ETS web site:

  • Dates and locations for the Praxis assessments
  • Registration information
  • Preparation for the test including sample questions and other available resources
  • Information about each test including scoring of the test.

The DPI does not have direct involvement in the ETS assessment process itself and all questions should be directed to: www.ets.org/praxis/ or call 1-800-772-9476.
