Professional Growth Requirement for License Renewal

Equivalency Clock Hours Option

NOTE: Effective July 1 2004, DPI no longer approved programs for Equivalency Clock Hours. The last licenses for which previously approved clock hours and/or continuing education units (ceu) could be used to meet the professional growth requirement for renewal were those with a begin date of July 1, 2008. The clock hours and/or continuing education units used for that renewal must have been earned no later than June 30, 2004.

For license renewals with an effective begin date no later than July 1, 2008:

  • The continuing professional education requirement could be met by completion of 180 equivalency clock hours in DPI approved non-credit activities (programs approved prior to July 1, 2004) such as workshops, seminars, conferences, or conventions. Participants were granted equivalency clock hours and provided with DPI PI-1681 Forms - Verification of Equivalency Clock Hours. Participants were expected to maintain a record of the original, completed PI-1681 forms acquired and submit them with the license application form at the time of renewal.

  • The continuing professional education requirement could be met by completion of a combination of semester credits and approved equivalency clock hours to equal six-semester credits. Thirty approved equivalency clock hours were equal to one semester credit.

  • Continuing Education Units (CEUs) Offered by Wisconsin Colleges and Universities:
The department accepted CEUs, earned prior to July 1, 2004, at public and private Wisconsin campuses towards the professional growth requirement for July 1, 2008 license renewal. One CEU was equivalent to ten Equivalency Clock Hours. Three CEUs were equivalent to one semester credit.

  • Wisconsin Technical College System Courses:
Courses were accepted for July 1, 2008 license renewal if: 1) they were approved for equivalency clock hours, 2) the Registrar has verified hours of actual classroom attendance on the official student transcripts, and 3) they were earned prior to July 1, 2004.
