Even Start Family Literacy

Title I Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged Part B Student Reading Skills Improvement Grants Subpart 3 Even Start Family Literacy Federal Law 20USC§1231-42

Overview

Even Start Family Literacy (ESFL) projects are school-community partnerships that help break the cycle of poverty and low literacy by integrating early childhood education, adult basic education, and parent education into a comprehensive program. ESFL implementation requires cooperative projects to fill gaps in existing high-quality community resources. Programs provide services with sufficient hours and duration to make sustainable changes in a family through basic instructional programs that

  • enrich language development, extend learning, and support high levels of educational success and
  • provide integrated instruction for families so children and parents learn together to develop habits of life-long learning and economic independence.
