Career-Connected Learning for Wisconsin Classrooms

Career‑connected learning (CCL) is an instructional approach that aligns course standards and assessments with the Wisconsin Career Readiness Standards. It helps students see how classroom content and competencies in any subject area or grade level connect to the world of work. Teachers intentionally link course objectives to careers and employability skills (communication, collaboration, critical thinking) to student interests, while integrating supportive relationships (teachers, peers, mentors, community). This approach helps learners understand why their learning matters for their future.

CCL in Action

Career‑connected learning brings course standards to life. For example, a 9th‑grade science teacher redesigns an ecosystems unit to have students investigate a local habitat‑restoration project, conduct fieldwork during a site visit to a nearby park, and collaborate with a guest mentor from the county conservation office. The multi‑week project serves as a career-focused summative assessment—students produce restoration plans, data portfolios, and a public presentation delivered to community and industry partners who provide authentic feedback. At the end of the project, students use Xello to explore related careers such as environmental scientist, conservation technician, and park manager as well as research postsecondary pathways (two‑year technical programs, environmental science majors, apprenticeships). Finally, students add their presentation to their ACP portfolio in Xello and some even update their ACP goals based on the experience. The teacher notices that students are much more engaged in this project. In particular, a student who is normally disruptive in class did not have any behavioral issues during the project and was actively engaging the guest mentor in conversations. These are just a few of the benefits when integrating career-connected learning into classrooms.

By simply changing the instructional approach, this one unit hits on multiple Wisconsin Career Readiness Standards.
