PowerSchool Data Breach
Earlier this week, the DPI was notified of a significant data breach involving PowerSchool, a system widely used by public, private, Choice, and charter schools in Wisconsin and schools across the nation. The breach impacted PowerSchool’s student information systems, including both staff and student data. PowerSchool has assured state officials that the breach has been contained.
While full details of the breach are still being compiled, PowerSchool is actively working to provide detailed information with affected customers. Please know that the DPI is in contact with PowerSchool and is working to identify ways we can support local schools during this time.

Grant program supporting development of recovery high schools now open
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction announced today that the application period for a planning grant for developing new recovery high schools is open through the end of the month.
The Recovery High Schools Planning Grant, established under 2023 Wisconsin Act 72, will provide up to four planning grants to support the development of recovery high schools - environments where students in recovery can thrive. As defined in Act 72, these schools are tailored to meet the unique needs of students who are overcoming substance use, or mental health challenges coexisting with a substance use.
The application window for the grant program is open now through Jan. 30. Each recipient could receive up to $75,000 in funding from the DPI if four grants are awarded, or up to $100,000 per grant if fewer than four are awarded. These grants are intended to help organizations and schools design and implement plans that foster healing, resilience, and academic success for vulnerable students. Public and private schools and nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply for the grant program. Application materials and additional information are available on the DPI’s Act 72 webpage.
