Important Information on Title IX and Student Protections

Recent updates to Title IX regulations from the U.S. Department of Education, along with legal challenges to those changes, have caused some confusion in Wisconsin school districts. The updated regulations clarify that Title IX protects all students from harassment and discrimination based on sex stereotypes, sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics. These legal challenges have raised questions about when or whether these protections apply to Wisconsin students.

Free COVID-19 Self-Tests available

The U.S. Department of Education, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is offering free, rapid, at-home COVID-19 tests to interested local educational agencies (LEAs). For information on how register for the COVID-19 Testing Supply Program and other resources on how to keep kids healthy and in school, see this letter from ED and HHS Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Proclamation: National School Lunch Week, October 14-18, 2024

I am pleased to present a proclamation declaring October 14–18, 2024, as National School Lunch Week. This proclamation honors the National School Lunch Program's vital impact on children's health, well-being, and education. 

The proclamation may be used in conjunction with other activities to promote National School Lunch Week and may be accessed on the Department of Public Instruction Website.  

You may also visit the School Nutrition Association's Website to learn more about how to celebrate. 


Listening Session - Cell Phone Ban Legislation

Several states have recently passed different versions of state law that limits or restricts cell phone use in schools. The Wisconsin Department of Public instruction is studying the issue and needs your input. We'd like to learn about your current local policies, their effectiveness and challenges, and what you believe might be helpful from a state-wide perspective. Specifically, we will be asking you to share:

  • Your current local policies and their effectiveness and challenges
  • What you believe might be helpful from a state-wide perspective

We have two dates for you to weigh in on this issue:

  • Tuesday, October 22 from 4-4:45
  • Wednesday, October 23 from 4-4:45
