Event Description

Researching your genealogy entails using a variety of resources that shed light on the family histories that may not have been handed down through the generations. The paper trail of the American Indian is created by a variety of authors and located in many different places. This workshop will help you find out if you have American Indian ancestry and how to find more about that ancestry. Here are the 3 topics that will be presented.
 
1. Doing Indian Genealogy
 
2. Upstreaming: How to Go Backwards
 
3. How to Search and Use Records
 
Speakers:
 
Dr. Theresa Schenck, Professor Emeritus, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Blackfeet/Ojibwe. Dr. Schenck has taught American Indian Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Washington State University and First Nations Studies at the University of Winnipeg. She was a recipient of the Native American Fulbright Scholarship to Canada in 1997. Dr. Schenck is the author of The Ojibwe Journals of Edmund F. Ely, William W. Warren: The Life, Letters and Times of an Ojibwe Leader; All Our Relations.
 
Lori B. Bessler, Reference Librarian, Wisconsin Historical Society-Library, Archives and Museum Collections. Lori Bessler has worked at the Wisconsin Historical Society Library Archives since 1988. She is a Reference Librarian and Outreach Coordinator. Lori has lectured throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest on genealogical topics for over 30 years and has been researching family history for over 40 years. She specializes in breaking down brick walls and finding hard-to-find resources.
