About the Training
This two day webinar training workshop will provide in-depth presentation and discussion on American Indian Studies in Wisconsin (often referenced as Wisconsin Act 31).
The focus of these virtual trainings is to help educators understand and implement Wisconsin Act 31, which is a state law requiring all public school districts and pre-service teacher programs to provide instruction on the history, culture, and tribal sovereignty of the American Indian nations and tribal communities in the state of Wisconsin.
This virtual training workshop is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and information they need to integrate the requirements of American Indian Studies into lesson plans, material selections, pedagogical practices, and district curriculum. Information about the Wisconsin American Indian nations' histories, treaty rights, sovereignty, and cultures will be presented throughout the workshops.
The goals of these virtual trainings for Parts I and II are to share best practices, information, model programs, and resources with administrators and teachers so that they are knowledgeable about American Indian Studies in Wisconsin and are able to meet the requirements of Wisconsin Act 31.
Individuals must participate in BOTH sessions (both Parts I and II) to receive credit for completion of the webinar training workshop.
For each online session, participants should join 15 minutes prior to the start.
Participants must use their cameras and audio for the webinar training workshop. In addition, please have a separate phone or tablet available for activities to be completed online.
Please know that the daily sessions will NOT be recorded, which tends to allow for more candid conversations and richer dialogue.
As a result of participating in this training, participants will:
- increase knowledge about American Indian Studies in Wisconsin.
- understand the statutory instructional requirements of implementing Wisconsin Act 31 into classroom and school.
- have an opportunity to learn about best practices, information, and model programs for incorporating American Indian Studies into teaching and learning.
*This two day webinar training workshop will meet the licensure stipulation ONLY for "Wisconsin American Indian Tribes and Bands", which is often referenced as Wisconsin Act 31. Individuals will need to attend each daily session (both Parts I and II) during the two day webinar training workshop along with completing two additional instructional assignments (these assignments will be discussed at the completion of the workshop to confirm attendance).

Bwaakoningwiid David O'Connor is originally from and is a member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe) in northern Wisconsin. In January 2012, he became the American Indian Studies Consultant at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI). He is also the Grant Director for the Network for Native American Student Achievement and the Culturally Responsive Early Childhood Tribal Project with Disproportionality Technical Assistance Network or "The Network".
In David's role at DPI, he supports school districts' efforts to provide instruction on the history, culture and tribal sovereignty of Wisconsin's American Indian nations and tribal communities, often referenced as Wisconsin Act 31 and the education of Native American students.
In addition, he provides training opportunities and presents at conferences and workshops throughout the state of Wisconsin on American Indian education and studies. David also provides general consultation on issues related to the education of American Indian students. He also serves as liaison to Wisconsin tribal education departments, Wisconsin Indian Education Association (WIEA), Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council (GLITC) and the Special Committee on State-Tribal Relations.
