Public Speed Test Dashboard and Maps

The public speed test dashboard and interactive maps are a public report of data collected through the Measurement Lab (M-Lab) broadband speed test. These data were collected as part of DPI's broadband speed testing initiative using M-Lab's Network Diagnostic speed test tool (NDT). You can learn more about the NDT speed test tool and DPI's speed testing initiative on the Broadband Speed Test page.

About the Data

The data presented were collected via the Measurement Lab (M-Lab) Network Diagnostic speed test tool (NDT). The tool is a single stream performance measurement of a connection’s capacity for “bulk transport” as defined in IETF’s RFC 3148. NDT measures “single stream performance” or “bulk transport capacity”. It measures speeds at the points in networks where a user connects to the Internet rather than within a user location.

The data used for these maps was extracted from the M-Lab database using BigQuery. Details about the data tools can be found here. A more complete explanation of the M-Lab data can be found here.

Median Download Speed Map

The Median Download Speed map show results of M-Lab download speed tests conducted in Wisconsin between January 1, 2020 and May 12, 2021.

Use the interactive legend to turn the county and school district boundary reference layers on/off or to view only one category of median load speeds. Clicking on individual points in the map will show a pop-up containing the summarized data for all speed tests at that location.

Notes:

  • The data was filtered to only show home internet providers.
  • Locations do not show specific locations where the speed tests were conducted.
  • Data is summarized by location and is categorized into High, Medium, and Low median download speeds.
  • The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction encouraged public school districts to have their students take the speed tests in their primary residence during early 2021.

Median Upload Speed Map

The Median Upload Speed map shows the results of M-Lab upload speed tests conducted in Wisconsin between January 1, 2020 and May 12, 2021.

Download and Upload Speeds by Provider and Location Dashboard

The M-Lab Download and Upload Speeds by Provider and Location dashboard shows the results of M-Lab download and upload speed tests conducted in Wisconsin between January 1, 2020 and April 12, 2021, filtered by internet provider and location.

There are four filters that control the output displayed in the dashboard. The Network Operator and Minimum # of Tests filters control both maps and all indicator widgets. The Median Download / Upload Speed filters control their respective maps and indicator widgets. The indicator widgets will not display information unless a Network Operator is selected from the dropdown.
