New Book Study Opportunities

The beginning of the year is the perfect time to find and commit to new learning opportunities. If you are interested in joining a book club, look below for two options.

Option 1) Time for Change by Anthony Muhammad and Luis F. Cruz

Transformational leaders have four distinctive skills: strong communication, the ability to build trust, the ability to increase the skills of those they lead, and a results orientation. Time for Change offers powerful guidance for those seeking to develop and strengthen the educational leadership skills needed for change management and overcoming resistance to change. Throughout this authoritative guide, Anthony Muhammad and Luis F. Cruz share concrete tools and strategies that will prepare you to lead your school toward lasting, meaningful, and strategic change.

Use this educational leadership book to inspire a shared vision and help in overcoming resistance to change:

  • Develop an understanding of educational leadership and change management as skills that can be practiced and improved.
  • Consider three questions of transformational leadership (Why? Who? How?) and then Do!
  • Learn about the technical and cultural dimensions of change and the ways in which both must be addressed.
  • Understand the reasons behind resistance to change and how to manage it through effective leadership.
  • Synthesize your skills as a school leader and utilize them to effect strategic change.

Consider joining us for a fall book study, Time for Change by Anthony Muhammad and Luis F. Cruz. You may notice that the audience called out in this text is leadership. In my many conversations with coaches across the state, and a growing body of research, the partnership between leadership and coaches is key to enacting adaptive change. Given the importance of this relationship, we are calling on coaches to reach out to a leader in their district or building to attend this book study with them. We will leave it to the coaches’ own discretion to determine who would best constitute an important leadership partnership. Please note that joining the book study with a leader is not a requirement, but these partnerships will be given preference.

The requirements for the book study are to attend one ½ hour orientation session and three one hour book study discussions. The dates and times are listed below. The text will be sent following attendance at the orientation session.

Joseph Kanke, the statewide coaching coordinator, will facilitate this book study on the following dates:

  • Orientation Session: October 2nd: 4:30-5:00 pm
  • Session One: October 29th: 4:30-5:30 pm
  • Session Two: November 12th: 4:30-5:30 pm
  • Session Three: December 17th: 4:30-5:30 pm

Elena Aguilar’s text, Onward engages readers in building emotional resilience both in yourself and others.

In September the UW Student-Centered Coaching Certificate program will be diving into chapter 4 and move onto another chapter each month moving forward. If you missed the first three chapters, you are still welcome to attend.

The other dates of the fall series are:
