Dear CTE teachers, coordinators, and administrators,

girl with piggybankApril brings a spotlight to National Financial Literacy Month and Money Smart Wisconsin Week 2024 is April 6-13. With the passage of Wisconsin Act 60, requiring a half-credit of personal financial literacy (PFL) for high school graduation beginning with the class of 2028, the CTE Team is reintroducing the PFL standards that were originally rolled out in 2020. This time around, we will include some engaging professional development on the standards, which include six strands:

  • Education and employment
  • Money management
  • Saving and investing
  • Credit and debt
  • Risk management and insurance
  • Financial mindset

The financial mindset strand is an innovation that sets Wisconsin apart from other state and national personal financial literacy standards. It addresses the mental habits needed to address financial decisions successfully. All six strands have been written into Act 60.

Financial Literacy Month is all about finding effective, engaging resources, a task that is ongoing. DPI has its own Personal Financial Literacy webpage with a link to several resources on WISELearn.

In addition, the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions manages a “Look Forward to Your Future” site that aims to provide K-12 resources for all ages. Go to the page dedicated to resources for educators to get curriculum ideas arranged by grade level.

Be on the lookout for an April 25 webinar on Wisconsin’s PFL Standards and Act 60. Hosted by the Department of Financial Institutions, DPI consultants will lead the presentation.

Have a productive Money Smart Wisconsin Week!
