Event Description

The annual campaign helps teach Wisconsin residents about weather hazards and provides resources to minimize the risks associated with severe weather.

On April 15, two statewide tornado drills are planned. A mock tornado watch will be issued statewide by the NWS at 1:00 p.m. The NWS will follow it with a statewide mock tornado warning at 1:45 p.m. The afternoon drill ends at 2:00 p.m. An evening drill is scheduled on the same day with a mock tornado warning to take place at 6:45 p.m.

Because of social distancing requirements in many areas, information on Regulatory Flexibility regarding drills can be found here: https://dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/administrators/e-mail/08_24_20_Regulatory_Flex_Framework.pdf

Please Note:
Due to unexpected technical issues, Wisconsin’s Statewide Tornado drill on April 15 will no longer include a live test of the Emergency Alert System. As a result, the National Weather Service will not be sending out a test warning that triggers an alert on NOAA Weather Radios and on broadcast TV and radio stations.

Schools are still encouraged to participate in the drill at 1:45 p.m. on April 15 or at any time that is more convenient for their operations. If there is severe weather in the state on April 15, the drill would be postponed to April 16. Updated information about any decision to cancel or postpone the drill will be posted at https://readywisconsin.wi.gov by 10 a.m. on the day of the drill.
