2023 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools Honoree

Students and staff at Tamarack Waldorf School in Milwaukee start each day outside, coming together as a group to join in a shared welcome and experience. Whether students explore the many natural and urban spaces the city has to offer, or work in the nearby garden, they feel closely connected with the environment surrounding them.

The 2023 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School encourages students to learn about the environment in many ways – from incorporating a curriculum focused on environmental literacy, to maintaining a school garden throughout the year. Every day is a new experience built on green and healthy living and sustainability.

Students at Tamarack Waldorf typically spend several hours a day outside, so it’s easy for them to learn and grow their mindfulness, gratitude, and overall awareness of the impact humans have on the Earth. Third and fourth graders are the main caretakers of the school garden, planting and caring for the crops throughout the school year and even over the summer months. In the fall, fourth graders harvest the garden, using the ripe vegetables they grew to create nutritious snacks and meals. Outdoor learning is a staple at the school, with teachers coming each day equipped with stools, wagons and other items, giving students an opportunity for hands-on learning about the environment.

Congratulations to Tamarack Waldorf School for being named a 2023 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School!
