The department uses geographic information system (GIS) mapping to display the various boundaries that impact schools. The layers below are intended for reference use only. It contains the best information the department has to date, but we cannot guarantee its accuracy. It should not be used for any land transactions, financial decisions, taxation, surveying, or other similar uses.

Layer Description
Technical Colleges This dataset includes boundaries for the Wisconsin Technical College System regions. This layer was created using unified and secondary public school district boundaries for the state of Wisconsin. Authoritative information used to create this dataset came from the Wisconsin Technical College board policy manual which was current as of December 2017 and last updated during November 2012.
Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESA) The layer is intended for your reference use only. It contains the best information the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has to date, but no guarantee of accuracy is made. It should not be used for any land transactions, financial decisions, taxation, surveying, or other similar uses. See summary information about boundary changes in the DPI property transfer log. The DPI is not responsible for data that is misinterpreted or altered in any way. Derived conclusions and analyses generated from this data are not to be considered attributable to the DPI.
Elementary School Districts This dataset includes boundaries for elementary school district boundaries within the state of Wisconsin. By law, all territory in the state must be included within a public school district. The US Census Bureau identifies three types of school districts. Unified school districts serve children of all grade levels, Elementary serve primarily students in the elementary grades, and Secondary primarily serve children in grades 9-12. Out of 422 school districts in Wisconsin, 44 are considered elementary districts. This layer is an aggregate of county-submitted data for school district boundaries.
Secondary School Districts

This dataset includes boundaries for secondary school district boundaries within the state of Wisconsin. By law, all territory in the state must be included within a public school district. The US Census Bureau identifies three types of school districts. Unified school districts serve children of all grade levels, Elementary primarily serve students in the elementary grades, and Secondary primarily serve children in grades 9-12. Out of 422 school districts in Wisconsin, 10 are considered secondary districts. This layer is an aggregate of county-submitted data for school district boundaries.

Out of 422 school districts in Wisconsin, 368 are considered unified districts. This layer is an aggregate of county-submitted data for school district boundaries.
