The Wisconsin – Qatar Program
WHAT: The Middle East International School is looking for elementary, middle school and high school teachers to assist with English instruction and/or teach in their area of certification. The school was established more than twenty years ago with the American curriculum (Common Core) as the foundation of instructional standards. English as a Second Language certification is desired, but not a requirement as all students attending the school do speak English as a second or third language. Representatives from Wisconsin serve as teachers for one year or longer as part of the MIS-Wisconsin partnership in a salaried position, including fully paid housing, transportation to and from the school, flight home for summer vacation, and fully paid health insurance (includes dental).
WHERE: Doha, Qatar is located directly east of Saudi Arabia on a small peninsula. The city is served by a world-class airport, more than twenty shopping malls including all American and European brands, and a variety of cultural opportunities such as museums, souk, beaches, and traditional cultural activities such as camel racing and falconry. Doha will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup and is currently experiencing tremendous growth in infrastructure. Its location on the Persian Gulf makes it one of the area’s most sought after vacation and shopping destinations. Qatar’s rich cultural heritage and varied landscape give visitors a window on the diversity in the Middle East.
WHO: Positions are open to any Wisconsin resident or graduate from a Wisconsin university. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree and valid teaching certification or will be awarded such a degree and certification by May 31, 2016.
Applicants are not required to have previous teaching experience.
Applicants should be eager to serve children from more than 70 countries around the world and be able to work with a staff representing more than 20 countries. This is a truly multi-cultural environment.
WHEN: The one-year contract with the Middle East International School begins in August 2016 and ends in June 2017. Renewal of the contract will on a yearly basis.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
- The contracted salary is 131,400 Qatari Riyals per year or approximately $36,000 (per month, $3,000 or QR.10,950). There are no taxes in Qatar.
- Contracts are renewable yearly.
- Shared housing is provided and rent paid by MIS.
- Daily transportation to and from school is provided.
- MIS pays the cost of Qatar visa/work permit.
- National Health Insurance is included which covers 100% of medical expenses (including dental and mental health).
- The Middle East International School covers round-trip airfare (economy class) at the start of the contract and completion of the contract.
BACKGROUND: Students attending private schools in Qatar begin English instruction in early childhood with 4-year old programs and continue studying English through middle school and high school. The country has hired thousands of native English speakers from the United States, England, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries to serve as teachers. Qatar is continually striving to provide higher levels of English education for its students and employees and has devoted much time to in-service training and innovative curriculum design to improve education.
