Notices to Lifetime, Short-Term Substitute, and Special Education Program Aide License and Permit Holders

Important information and notices for those holding a lifetime license, short-term substitute permit, or special education program aide license follows.

Lifetime License Holders

Availability of Background Check Applications

The background check application for lifetime license reinstatement (5900) will be unavailable due to end-of-year maintenance beginning January 2, 2026. Background check applications will be open and available to users on January 9, 2026.

License Notifications

The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is emailing those lifetime license holders who need to complete a background check and verification of work history to maintain their lifetime license.  Those emails will be sent between January 12 and 15, 2026 with the steps that need to be taken.  The requirements to maintain a lifetime license are found in Wisconsin Administrative Code §PI 34.041 and Wisconsin Statutes §118.19 (10)(b) and §118.19 (18)(c).

Short-term Substitute Teaching Permits

Permit Renewal Notifications

Notices will be sent via email between January 8th and 9th, 2026 to remind permit holders whose permits are expiring to renew their short-term substitute teaching permit.

Special Education Program Aide (SEPA) License

License Renewal Notifications

Notices will be sent via email between January 6th and 7th, 2026 to remind license holders whose licenses are expiring to renew their SEPA license.
