Census 2020: There is Still Time to Participate

Tuesday, July 28, 2020

Starting on August 11, Census takers will interview those who have not responded to the 2020 Census. Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, the United States Census Bureau has adjusted the timeline for participation. Now, the self-response phase has been extended to October 31, 2020.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction encourages educators and education stakeholders to share reminders about the Census within local contexts to ensure an accurate count.

An accurate census count not only establishes a count of the population, but many educational assistance programs rely on it for funding. Among those is Title I of the Every Student Succeeds Act, which is designed to close achievement gaps and ensure all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education in Wisconsin schools.

Other school programs reliant on an accurate Census count include:

  • Special education

  • Teacher training

  • Technology

  • School lunch assistance

  • Head Start

  • Afterschool programs
