Education for Homeless Children and Youth Grant Opportunities

Tuesday, March 17, 2026

The applications for two Education for Homeless Children and Youth (EHCY) grants are due April 17. One grant focuses on innovative practices for students experiencing homelessness and the other focuses on compliance under the EHCY law.

2026-2029 EHCY Innovation Grant

This grant is for LEAs who want to focus on innovative academic and non-academic/support strategies to support students experiencing homelessness. Grant applicants write goals based on data review and needs assessment conducted at the LEA. The grant operates on a three-year cycle, with grant recipients receiving $25,000 to $100,000 each year based on the total number of identified students experiencing homelessness during the 2024-25 school year.

2026-2028 EHCY Compliance Grant

This grant is for LEAs who want extra technical assistance and support to get into compliance under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and go beyond compliance in one chosen area. Grant applicants choose goals from a set of pre-written options. This grant operates on a two-year grant cycle, with grant recipients receiving $10,000 each year.

Grant applications and guidelines can be found on DPI’s EHCY Grant Applications and Guidance webpage.

The grant webpage contains presentations and recordings of informational webinars that have occurred. One presentation is designed to help applicants decide which grant is right for the district and other presentations contain specific information on each grant and instruction on how to write effective SMARTE goals.
