September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time to remind Wisconsinites of the countless benefits holding a library card brings them.
Free of charge, a library card provides access to essential items, such as books, various forms of media, computers with internet, printing and copying services, and various learning opportunities, such as in-person and virtual homework assistance, STEAM programs/activities, technology workshops, and much more. With a changing landscape, libraries across Wisconsin have adjusted by offering more than just books, incorporating a growing number of digital items.
In 2019 alone, Wisconsin’s public libraries totaled more than 26 million visits, with nearly 48 million physical items circulated. In that same year, public libraries reported offering over 122,000 programs, with almost 3 million attendees.
Library Card Sign-up Month has been held every September since 1987, and is used as an opportunity for the American Library Association and libraries across the nation to partner and to ensure every child signs up for a library card. Gov. Tony Evers also recently proclaimed September as National Library Card Sign-up Month.
