Special message from Dr. Darrell Williams, Assistant State Superintendent, Division for Libraries and Technology
This April, we celebrate the 40th annual School Library Month. This month is not just about acknowledging school libraries—it’s about honoring the dedicated professionals like you who make them such transformative spaces. In her proclamation, Wisconsin State Superintendent Jill Underly urges the residents of Wisconsin “to recognize school libraries and the valuable role of school librarians in the education of our youth and encourage students and citizens to familiarize themselves with their library’s readily available resources.”
School librarians play a vital role in supporting student learning and development. On behalf of the DPI, we want you to know that we see you and value the importance of your contributions to literacy, AI, standards, and more. None of the strides we have made in these areas would have been possible without you.
As a school librarian, you do so much more than manage resources. You are an educator, a literacy advocate, a technology expert, and a mentor. You teach students how to find, evaluate, and use information effectively, fostering critical thinking and media literacy. The collections you curate provide opportunities for students to explore and engage with authentic stories. Other educators rely on your expertise in information and technology shared through coaching and collaboration.
School libraries are changing, and you are leading the way. From implementing STEAM and maker spaces to integrating digital literacy and coding programs, you help students develop skills for the most up-to-date technology. You ensure that your library remains a dynamic, welcoming space where all students feel seen and valued. Because of your efforts, our children and adults are better prepared for the future.
Thank you for all that you do. Your passion, dedication, and creativity make an immeasurable difference in the lives of students and the broader school community. The many hats that you wear to meet the unique needs of your respective diverse communities is truly appreciated. As we celebrate this School Library Month, take a moment to recognize the incredible work you do every day—because your impact is truly worth celebrating!
Because of you, the library is the most important place in any school and community. It is the only place where you can go everywhere without going anywhere! -Darrell Williams
