In December, we observed Human Rights Month, and Milmaglyn Morales, Wisconsin Educational Services Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Center Director, reflected on celebrating Deaf identity and culture.
Video Description: Milmaglyn appears confidently on screen wearing a sleek black blazer layered over a blue shirt, paired with elegant gold/silver earrings. Her short, curly hair frames her face, adding to her bold and stylish look. The background is a smooth blue, complementing her outfit and creating a clean, professional atmosphere.
As we observe Human Rights Month this December, we take time as a school community to reflect on the dignity, equality, and rights that belong to every human being, regardless of their background, ability, or language.
This month holds a special meaning as we celebrate not only the universal values of inclusion and respect, but also the diverse voices that shape our schools, including the rich culture and contributions of our Deaf students, staff, and families.
To be Deaf is not a limitation. It is a unique identity, a vibrant culture, and a powerful language in American Sign Language. Our Deaf community reminds us every day that communication takes many forms, and that true inclusion happens when we all work to understand and connect with one another.
I want to recognize and thank our Deaf students and Deaf leaders for helping lead the way in building a more accessible and empathetic learning environment for all. Your strength, creativity, and pride in your identity are inspiring, and your voices, whether spoken, signed, or written, matter deeply.
As WESP-DHH, we reaffirm our commitment to:
- Accessible education and communication for all students
- Valuing ASL and Deaf culture as vital parts of our school community
- Listening and learning from every student’s lived experience
Human rights are not just global ideals. They are lived every day in our classrooms, hallways, and relationships. Let this month be a reminder that when we honor the rights of the Deaf and all marginalized groups, we build a better future for everyone.
In unity and respect,
Milmaglyn Morales
