Join the Welcoming Schools National Day of Reading

Organize a reading for Welcoming Schools National Day of Reading: A Celebration of Stories Supporting Transgender and Non-Binary Youth! This year, the Welcoming Schools National Day of Reading will be held on Thursday, Feb. 16

After a national anti-LGBTQ+ hate group bullied a young transgender girl in Mount Horeb, WI, her community rallied behind her by hosting a community reading of "I Am Jazz" by transgender advocate Jazz Jennings. This video created by the Human Rights Campaign went viral and inspired many other schools and communities to schedule similar readings.

Now every year, in honor of the Mount Horeb community’s allyship, communities across the country join HRC's Welcoming Schools program for its annual National Day of Reading: A Celebration of Stories Supporting Transgender and Non-Binary Youth.

Check out the organizing toolkit and other resources to create a safe learning environment for all students on the Welcoming Schools site. This event is co-sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA) and The American Association of School Librarians (AASL).
