As we wrap up the school year, we wanted to update you about important developments happening at the state level that directly impacts Wisconsin’s K-12 public schools and libraries.
Right now, the state budget is being developed by the Joint Committee on Finance. Talks between Governor Evers and legislative Republicans have recently stalled (you can find Dr. Underly's statement on this here on the DPI website).
Because of this, the Joint Committee on Finance is expected to write its own version of the budget and will take up education funding in an executive session tomorrow (Thursday, June 12) at 1 p.m. The meeting will be live streamed on Wisconsin Eye.
That version of the budget will then go to the full legislature for debate and a vote. After legislative approval, the budget goes to the governor, who can sign it, veto it entirely, or make partial vetoes. This typically happens by July 1. If that timeline is not met, the state continues operating under current spending levels until the bill is signed into law.
Our public schools and libraries need funding that is flexible, spendable, and predictable. This budget is critical to our students, our schools, our libraries, and the future of our state.
We continue to advocate for funding of our budget priorities, including:
- Increasing the Special Education reimbursement to at least 60 percent
- Investment in student mental health
- Free meals for all kids
- Education workforce and supporting educators
As the state budget process unfolds, you can find up to date information and resources on the DPI's web site.
