Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute Event

Tuesday, January 5, 2021

Join Wisconsin Public Radio and PBS Wisconsin at noon on Monday, January 18 to honor Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for Wisconsin's 41st official “Together as One” Tribute and Ceremony.

In the past, the event was held at the Wisconsin State Capitol and open to the public, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will be pre-recorded.

Dr. Jonathan Overby will serve as host for the 2021 event, and it will air in collaboration with Wisconsin Public Radio and PBS Wisconsin.

  • PBS Wisconsin will air "The Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration 2021," a one-hour pre-produced program featuring segments from past years on the flagship channel at 10 p.m. It will air on the Wisconsin Channel at 7 p.m. and again at 11 p.m.

  • Wisconsin Public Radio will simulcast its celebration of Dr. King's Birthday Commemoration at noon on the Ideas Network and the NPR News and Music Network.

According to Dr. Overby, the program will feature excerpts from author Michelle Alexander's speech at the 32nd Annual Tribute in 2011, with a showcase of past performances by Chicago's G.M.A.C. Mass Choir, and Milwaukee's Latino Strings. Recipients of the 2021 M.L.K. Heritage Awards will be introduced, and Governor Tony Evers will present Wisconsin's official state proclamation honoring Dr. King.
