November is Military Family Month

Tuesday, October 29, 2019

The Department of Public Instruction joins schools around the state in celebrating the service and sacrifice of veterans, military members, and their families throughout the month of November.

Most people are aware that we observe Veterans Day on November 11, but some are not aware that November is Military Family Appreciation Month. We applaud the school districts and our students that invite members of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and members of the various branches of the service to join them in their district events during the month to recognize and thank them for their service to our community, state, and nation.

In April, we will celebrate the Month of the Military Child. We have many students whose families are connected to the Guard, Reserve, and Active duty components of the military in our schools. Starting in 2018, parents/guardians are asked to identify if their children are military connected students when they enroll/register their children in schools.

DPI leaders work closely with Shelley Joan Weiss, Wisconsin commissioner for the education of military children, who leads the Wisconsin State Council for the Interstate Compact for the Education of Military Children.
