Pandemic Relief Available for Foster Youth

Tuesday, August 10, 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has magnified many challenges for youth in Wisconsin. For foster youth who have aged out of care during the pandemic, additional support is now available.

The federal government recently passed the Supporting Foster Youth and Families Through the Pandemic Act. Through this act, foster youth who aged out of care between January 27, 2020, and September 30, 2021, are eligible for relief. Aid comes in the form of financial assistance, which can be used for housing, utilities, bills, nutrition, and other necessities.

Many foster youth can be difficult to reach, as they often do not stay in contact with the Wisconsin’s Independent Living Program. Therefore, they may not have the proper communication channels to receive this relief information. Educators are encouraged to reach out to eligible youth and refer them to https://dcf.wisconsin.gov/foster-relief, where they can learn more and apply.
