School Gardens Can Stay Green All Year Round!

Tuesday, March 18, 2025
Lettuce sprouts bathe in the sunlight of the Farm to School team's vertical hydroponic growing tower.
These sprouts started their growing journey in early January of this year.

Thinking about your spring garden? The School Nutrition Team has been growing fresh, delicious lettuce all winter—even in freezing temperatures! How? Hydroponics!

Hydroponic systems allow plants to thrive without soil by using nutrient-rich, pH-balanced water. The School Nutrition Team has been using a vertical hydroponic unit, where plants grow in a tower year-round, making it an efficient and sustainable option for fresh produce.

Many schools are incorporating hydroponic towers into their Farm to School programs, offering students hands-on learning experiences while producing over 25 lbs. of fresh food every 28 days for school meals. Even more exciting—one lucky school will win the hydroponic unit to keep permanently through a special raffle!
