UniverCity Year Seeks Partners for Addressing Community Concerns

Monday, June 17, 2019

The University of Wisconsin—Madison UniverCity Year is seeking requests for proposals to partner with faculty and students. Wisconsin school districts are governmental entities able to propose a project surrounding an important issue. According to the UniverCity Year web page, past projects have addressed “concerns around sustainability, economic development, education, social services, health, housing and more.”

UniverCity Year creates partnerships between community participants with a local challenge and UW—Madison faculty and students. Projects are matched with the appropriate expertise from the university and incorporated into actual courses as part of a three-year collaboration.

For example, as part of the city of Monona’s UniverCity Year project, graduate students in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning worked with the city as part of their Planning Workshop course at UW—Madison. A major part of the project included plans for safer biking and walking routes for children going to and from school. Kurt Paulsen, UW—Madison Department of Urban and Regional Planning associate professor, served as the faculty mentor.

Another Wisconsin school district is also reaping the benefits of partnering with UniverCity Year. Students from the Juda School District worked with students from the UW—Madison Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering to create energy efficiency solutions, saving the school money.

For more information, including how to access the request for proposals, visit the Partner with UniverCity Year web page.

Proposals are due by 9:00 a.m. on July 29.
